Smartphones are battery hungry for the most part. They have a habit of dying just when you need them most. There are a plethora of various external batteries and cases available to try and solve this problem but they tend to look ugly. That’s not the case with the Nokia DC-16, a sleek cyclinder available in multiple colours that holds a 2200mah battery and can charge any device over USB.
I’ve been putting one through its paces in the last few days. It’s not that much bigger than a tube of smarties so fits great in the pocket and whilst it wont charge your devices multiple times like some of the bigger heavier batteries on the market, it will give you some extra juice needed to keep you going for an extra few hours.
The DC-16 only comes with a short Micro USB cable which is used to both charge the battery and the majority of devices on sale today and because it has Micro USB at one end and standard USB at the other, it’s possible to charge both this and your phone at the same time which is what I have been doing.
I used the DC-16 on a few different devices and the results where as follows. My main phone is a Nexus 4 and the DC-16 got my phone from dead to 88% charge which isn’t a full charge but it’s close. On an iPhone 5 it managed to recharge the from dead to 100% and still had a little juice left over. I plugged it into my iPad mini using Apples lighting cable and continues using the iPad on 50% brightness. I got around 30% increase in battery before the DC-16 gave up. On another day I left the iPad mini on standby and saw a 40% increase in battery.
Overall I’m really happy with the DC-16. It may not have the ability to charge multiple devices at once or fully charge but it’s lightness and portability more than make up for that. If you just need a good looking battery pack to give you an extra boost on your phone then go for this. If you’re looking for something to power you for days between trips to the wall socket then get something else.
Thanks to MobileFun for allowing me to review the Nokia DC-16. They sell a range of Nokia accessories and battery packs so be sure to check them out if you’re in the market for one.
