So I got finally case for my Nexus 4 and it only took 3 weeks to arrive. Unlike +John McKenzie I’m not above doing quick and hasty review of it.
First thing I noticed when I took it out of the package was the smell, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such toxic odour, luckily it went away in day or two. Not an issue, unless you’re thinking about ordering a gimp mask made out of the same material though you might want to air it a bit before use.
Secondly, it isn’t as bad I expected. I’ve learned to set my expectations to low when ordering cheap stuff. The fit is good and the cut outs are where they supposed to be. The plastic cut out flaps covering the micro-USB port and headset connector are bit fiddly to lift out of the way, but not overly so. They also expose enough of the connectors surrounding that I haven’t had any problems plugging chargers or headphones in to them.
The Silicone part of the case also covers power and volume buttons which doesn’t affect power buttons much, but maybe because of the ridges on the case volume is noticeably more difficult to change. This isn’t a bad thing for me, I’ve had volume accidentally go up to ‘bleed from ears’ levels before and if I can avoid that. All the better.
The hard exoskeleton isn’t that hard, it gives away nicely when you put the case on and doesn’t feel brittle, so maybe it can take more installs and removes than the more expensive case I once had from known manufacturers.
The case also has a stand, which is nice however mine is a bit bend so it protrudes a little when not in use. I don’t know if it came that way, or I managed to cause the damage myself already. Anyway, not a big issue, but slightly annoying.
And now on to the part that made me order this one and not for example the ArmourDillo which is very similar – The holster.
The holster has belt clip, which is also a stand. Why? I don’t know, because only way you can put the case in the holster is screen facing it. So it seems a bit pointless. The clip also rotates, which I also deemed pointless until I sat in the car and felt phone burrowing into me then suddenly I saw how it was a good thing.
Other than that, the fit is good and should keep phone in place even if it doesn’t have any locking mechanisms, like Seidio ones have, but still easily removable. Next week I’ll get some proper field testing for it while running around in work, so if you’ll see me post about dropped phone, it failed.
I could do a drop test to see how sturdy this case is, but…No. This is after all Nexus 4 were talking about.
tldr; Quite nice, worth the price. Smells bad.
