In the recent biography of Steve Jobs from Author Walter Isaacson it states that Steve Jobs said that he believed Android was a “Stolen Product”, now apparently Jobs was not happy with this and furious to the point of vowing to spend all of Apple’s money if necessary to destroy Google’s mobile operating system.
He said this with a quote from the book – “I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
In my view Steve Jobs here is being very hypocritical and here is why. The development of technology through the years has seen so many innovations and of course they get used by other companies as well after the first implementation of said innovation, well Apple is no exception to this with an example being the iPhone and it’s operating system iOS as it’s a device that has been derived from earlier products and innovations. Apple created a new design and utilized earlier ideas with improvements put on top of those, not a whole new design, idea and product at all. The Apple iPhone Smartphone and iOS still relied on earlier ideas and developed on from those to make that product.
So what differentiates Android with it’s product to the model of Apple’s iPhone with iOS to make Android a “Stolen Product”. Was it the touchscreen on the phone, well Palm had that and they also had the implementation of a user interface that launched applications with a simple touch of the screen, If you also throw in the Smartphone feature of apps then we can see Palm and Windows devices had that way before Apple had iOS out there with the App Store, integration of Email and such things as daily tasks had been in phones long before as well in Blackberry and many more devices. Well i could go on but i won’t as you get the picture with were i am going here, simply put it Steve Jobs has been a Hypocrite describing Android as a “Stolen Product” and forgetting that Apple had done the same with their own model, if he was to use that label he used with Android then Apple would be exactly the same thing.
If he thought the form factor of a Smartphone is the copy of Apple then that was ridiculous, if he thought the touch enabled software was a copy of Apple than that was ridiculous, if he thought that Apple invented and made the Smartphone’s ideas as we know than that was ridiculous. If Android was a “Stolen Product” then so was Apple’s iPhone with iOS.
Apple have always been the same with their products and claiming uniqueness, but in reality they are not that at all. The original Macintosh design came from Xerox, the Apple II was based on those before it, and the same as the iPhone and it’s iOS software they were derived from others ideas and innovations with them being developed with those concepts on board. Apple made using others ideas and making them better their speciality over the years and now for the revelation that Steve Jobs to have said that suggests that the man was very one track minded and single visioned with a paranoid sense of opinion in regards to any other company but his own.
Technology as we know it can never be invented and developed with new ideas and innovations every time a new product is made. Most of the great products in consumer electronics that we know today have come from others ideas and made better with those concepts implemented, the innovative ideas that move technology forward are essential to bring us greater products along the line and Apple, Android or any other franchise with a product are different. It’s a big shame that we get companies like Apple and figurehead’s like they had with Steve Jobs believing that their products designs, ideas and models are all unique in some way, it’s simply not the way it is and they are living in a fantasy world.
Now Steve Jobs in my view although a great man that drove forward technology into a new era, he was i believe Paranoid, hypocritical and one track minded in regards to Apple’s model with competition being wrong on every level when it threatened his company’s standing. Now, maybe you may can call it a power thing or a blindness to reality, but i think it’s stems from more than that.
Eric Schmidt was a friend and a former Apple board member at Apple and some believe Steve Jobs felt he was betrayed and ideas taken from Apple by Eric Schmidt to Android was a reason for his vendetta against Google’s mobile platform. The Antennagate scandal was even blamed upon others and he believed that antennagate was part of a smear campaign by rival phone manufacturers. Apparently Steve Jobs believed Google and Motorola were trying to “shoot Apple down”, all this was taken personally and obviously attributed to the paranoid notion that everyone was out to get Apple and it’s products.
The hypocritical view by Steve Jobs that Android was and is a “Stolen Product” is absolute madness. It seemed he believed he was the only person who had great ideas and great vision, but the reality is that many have great ideas and many have great visions of a model and platform that they ultimately have built upon previous innovations and concepts, just as Steve Jobs did, and just as Apple did. Apple and Steve Jobs took newer innovations, concepts and brought them to the forefront with well put together execution. Let’s not take the achievement of Apple and Steve Jobs away with heralding a new pathway in technology with those executions, but the problem lies when Steve Jobs and Apple started attacking others for doing the exactly same thing as they did.
It shows Steve Jobs, Apple and the company as what it is and that is a Hypocritical powerhouse who see’s things one way and that I’m afraid is there way.
