Six months ago if someone had told me that the BlackBerry® would get Skype™ and Instagram™ on board with the new BB10 operating system I would have said “in your wildest dreams”. Well for BlackBerry® 10 users, dreams apparently do come true.
On January 30th, Research in Motion® became BlackBerry®. With this change a new ethos has emerged. BlackBerry® are starting to understand that competition in the smartphone and tablet arena is about forming strategic alliances in order to create synergies with products. This turning point has created a beneficial environment for end-users, developers and BlackBerry®. According to Forbes, BlackBerry® (trading as BBRY) stock is up 7¢ today already. Confidence is gaining in the product as more and more people get a look at the Z10 and Q10 devices.
Now back to the applications themselves. With Skype™ on board BB10 users will have a truly cross-platform video calling experience. This is of course aside from the inbuilt video calling functionality included in BBM™ for BlackBerry® 10. Skype™ is now a part of Microsoft® for those who do not know and they have injected a lot of effort into its continued success. Notably of course Microsoft® recently migrated MSN® users (for those outside of China) to Skype™. Despite this it remains to be seen how popular it will be amongst BlackBerry® smartphone users as they may have shied away from it before due to a lack of BlackBerry® support. Still, from what I can gather ooVoo has positioned itself as a more than capable alternative, which is something worth considering.
As with Skype™, there is an inbuilt feature which rivals another application yet to be announced officially that is coming to BlackBerry® 10. This BlackBerry® 10 feature is the camera’s photograph filters and that’s right you’ve heard it everywhere already – its Instagram™. Previously it was suspected that Microsoft® were behind the lack of an Instagram™ announcement at the BlackBerry® 10 launch, but our sources are firm in saying that the application will come to BlackBerry® 10 and even offer a timeframe. I will not tell you when just yet, but I will say that it shouldn’t be too long before you see Instagram™ and Skype™ gracing the pages of BlackBerry® World.
All existing BlackBerry® users are aware of the fantastic quality of the inbuilt applications on BlackBerry® smartphones. Although I still haven’t managed to get my hands on a Z10 yet, most of all I am looking forward to the announced inbuilt applications.
Until the next time…
