Hand up if you have heard of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) – you haven’t?
In October of 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking cellphones would no longer be allowed. But the librarian provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it.
If you are a Unites States resident then this is the worst possible news for you in terms of law changes relating to mobile phones.
The good news is however that you have 2 days in which to get your phone unlocked before it becomes illegal so what you waiting for? Stop reading this, get to the store and get it unlocked!
Don’t despair too much though because you can still but a sim free handset which is permitted to be unlocked and it’s also permitted to have a phone which the network unlock for free (AT&T unlock when a handset is out of contract).
Thankfully these laws apply only to the US for now and let’s all pray that just like Eggnog, it stays in the US.
