As many of you know, and as Gary posted just a few minutes ago, Google Reader is being removed from active duty by Google however whilst this in itself is a tragic mistake, the consequences go far deeper than just that of saying farewell to a much loved service.
Many developers make a living out of Google Reader apps that use the service but are re-engineered to give a better user interface and it only takes a quick look on any phone markets store (iPhone, Windows Phone, Android and BlackBerry) to see just how many people have made apps for the service.
Looking even closer at the announcement, Ashley Esqueda says “The fact that Reader can get shut down so flippantly makes me EXTREMELY nervous about Feedburner.”
This is a very fair point, where does this end, let’s be honest, Google Talk has been hanging on a shaky peg for a long time and with messenger being worked on this could be the next casualty or will be be Google Currents which also lacks a decent userbase?
Either way, this shows a blatant disregard for what the Google users want and Google should really re-think this one.
