If you download only one app this week, make it this one: Samsung Hope Relay 2012
Every once in awhile a company surprises us and does something nice, by doing something out of the ordinary and highly charitable which stands out from the crowd. This time it is the turn of Samsung. Already the mobile market leaders and the principal sponsors of the London 2012 Olympic Games, they are now using this influence to raise some serious money for charity via The Samsung Hope Relay.
However this is not going to be a normal event, somewhat akin to the race-for-life events held for Cancer Research, this is a project to try to get everyone doing a little something, just walking or running a mile, or 26, whatever your fancy and this time Samsung will be doing the hard work to add the value!
Let me introduce to you the Samsung Hope Relay app, available for all Samsung (app compatible) phones, all android smartphones and some lesser known phones that run iOS or something…. (iOS app will be available later in the week, blame Apple!)
This app may be similar to some others out there in how it operates, however this is for a special cause and not a permanent event, nor an app to keep forever. It tracks your journey (when you want it to) and will record how many miles you travel, but here is the kicker:
SAMSUNG WILL DONATE £1 TO CHARITY FOR EACH MILE YOU COMPLETE (up to a maximum of 26 miles, (£26 per person), a marathon).
Please please check this app out, even if you just complete one mile you will be helping some fantastic causes and all you have to do is walk or run which most of you probably do already in your day to day lives.
As the title says, if you only download one app this week please please make it this one, share the market link on Facebook and Twitter, spread the word and if you think of how many people have Samsung, Android or iOS devices you can just imagine how much money we could be raising here and really no one is asking you to do much at all.
The App Specifics
Once you install the application you will be given the chance to create your avatar, your face on a pre-made body, you enter some details (name, email and town/city) and edit some privacy settings. You are then given the choice of your avatar being used publicly (this will be used on the Olympic Torch tour).
Next you can set your sharing settings for Facebook*.
You then join or create a team, these are like minded individuals, maybe your workplace or school, or even just a group of friends. Once you join a team you will be able to see who else is part of it and how much money the team has raised so far.
You will be able to see details of past runs, spread the word, get cheers, as well as watch and share a video of your avatar.
You can also see when the next relay event is, local to you.
This app does use mobile data and gps so it will drain your battery a little, but think of the money going to charity. You can always uninstall the app when you have done all you want (or the full £26).
*May be region specific
