Android is taking over control of the Smartphone market and with the boom has also come plenty of lawsuits against Google/Android based on Patents they hold. Microsoft you might have read have been probably benefiting from the boom of Android just as much as Google. The figures now have reached 53% of manufacturers paying Microsoft license fees.
Reported to have earned $444 Million from Android last year through license deals, Microsoft are earning money for doing nothing and have the potential to gather similar deals from others going forward into 2012. Deals already with manufacturers that include Samsung, Viewsonic, HTC, Acer to name a few. The most recent addition is the ODM Compal license signing and surely other manufacturers will fall to the same fate.
Below is the Android Patent Licensing and Litigation Tree.
Google have an issue here that they seemingly are not to bothered about themselves. The Motorola Mobility acquisition that has yet to be finalised has worried other manufacturers that Google has no care for their interests, and maybe that is the case, on the other hand for Google to get round the issue Android would have to be severely redesigned, overhauled, to be reflecting upon patent issues and that isn’t going to happen.
Microsoft is benefiting and seemingly there’s nothing Google can do about it, as Android gains in power and market share, Microsoft gains more profit for doing diddly squat.
