Google’s Cloud Music service has been about for some time now, and although apparently U.S. only, many people have managed to get invites from places further afield. It basically involves going to their web page at http://music.google.com and requesting an invite, if you are in the U.S. this poses no real problem, if you are in the UK like me, i had to use a VPN.. But…
We at Land Of Droid have 100 spare invites, So head over to our giveaway post here : Google Music Beta Invite Giveaway – 100 Invites Up For Grabs Who Wants One? to find out how to accept the invite and sign up.
My main objective here is once your in, what to do. Once in, you will be prompted to download the music manager, or if you missed wed this step, you can always click on the link on the top right of the page.
Once downloaded and installed, you will be greeted with a page like this. Now at this point, its worth noting, that Google Music will try to upload ALL of your music collection. if this is what you want then that’s fine. i really didn’t, so I immediately changed my selection to the “Other Folders” option, and then preceded to select songs I wanted.
There is also a settings page where you can select manual or automatic upload, and choose a few other options.
Once you have made your selections, Hit apply, and then… go make a cup of tea, possibly a few hundred, because its going to take a good while!
After uploading is completed, you can now go and view all your music stored “on the cloud”. you will be greeted with a page such as this.
Here you can browse through your collection, create playlists, and play your music on any computer that has a browser, just select the album and hit play on the bottom left of your screen.
As for playlists, just hit the + Button, and type in the playlist name you want. then just go into any album, and drag the tracks from the main window onto the playlist of your choice. couldnt be simpler!
Now onto the real reason you wanted Google Music! streaming on your nice shiny Android Phone.
As you will see, all pages have a link top right to the android market, so a quick visit there will have the Music app winging its way to you phone or tablet.
Now at this point you MAY not be able to install the Music app on your device due to regional issues, if this is a problem then take a look here http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess and download the Market Access app. This basically allows you to fool the market into thinking you have a device in the US. Your phone will need to be rooted to allow this app to work. (Alternatively, it may be possible to download the APK from HERE) If you decide to use the Market Access app route, open it up, click “backup value”, then hit “Providers”. Top on the list will be “T-Mobile US”, select this one, Confirm “Yes” and your done, then go to the market on your phone. It should then allow the Music app to be found and installed.
Then go back into market access, and click restore value, to reset your original network code.
Once that’s installed, open the Music app up, and hit your “Menu” button, and then go to “settings”.
Once here, you can select your google account that has all your music in, and define settings like Wifi only etc. As you can see, I allowed streaming over any connection, but set the download music to Wifi only.
PLEASE NOTE, If you find the settings button is missing, you will need to go into the main phone settings, Selects “Applications”, Then “Manage applications”. Scroll to find the “Music” App, and select it. the hit the “Clear data” button on the left hand side. then hit back until back at your home screen. This should enable the settings button in the music app.
Once all that is done, your pretty much good to go! it will also show any playlist on the device too, just scroll across to playlist and they should appear once the device has synced all your tracks.
There is also an update version of Google Music Android app, that hasnt yet been released (so may be bugs) That has been pulled from the new Ice Cream Sandwich build. If you want to tey that version, please head over to the post Google Music 4.0.1 Apk From ICS Leaked To Download for more details.
Dont forget, you can always play your music from any browser window directly from http://music.google.com
