Intel is waiting for the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich before they start releasing Smartphone’s, Tablets and Android devices with their processors apparently. Ice Cream Sandwich is now Intel x86 ready and although it wasn’t made public in terms of what features ICS had, it’s certainly a very significant one indeed. We could be seeing Intel powered x86 Smartphone’s and tablets as soon as next year.
Moving away from it’s own affiliation with MeeGo to work with Android is a massive boost that finally Intel are on board and ready to go with the little green robot.
"Ice Cream Sandwich includes OS optimization for x86, so Intel architecture-based devices can support it," said Suzy Greenberg, an Intel spokeswoman.
Currently Android is a very ARM affair and chipset makers like Nvidia, Samsung, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have been reaping the benefits greatly. Intel will have to do a lot to catch up, but then again it’s Intel for Christ sake, they have the power, the means, and they knowledge to make a major impact in this mobile market with Android.
Will we be seeing a Intel powered device spearheading the Android sector next year or will they fail to catch up and make an impact at all, with manufacturers ignoring them for the respected current ARM chip producers and reliable use. Although, x86 powered Intel devices sounds very inviting indeed, and i for one look forward in Intel getting into the ring with the rest of the chipset makers, bring the competition and bring the power Intel.
